Year 5

Welcome back

I hope you have had an enjoyable Easter break and also made the most of the long bank holiday weekend. It doesn’t seem long at all until the May half term therefore some topics will run over into the 2ndpart of the Summer term.

Our main topic for the Summer term has a Science focus, ‘Earth, Sun and Moon’. We will begin with what we already know about Space and the Solar System and move onto finding out more about ‘Outer Space’! Our trip to the Greenwich Observatory will be later in the term, I will send out more information nearer the time.

This half term in Literacy we will be focusing on our film narrative unit and looking at the works of Raymond Briggs. We will end the year with a ‘Persuasive writing’ topic in which we will collect and identify different writing techniques and use them in drafting and writing our own persuasive texts in pairs or individually.

Our RE Topic this term will be on ‘Pentecost’, and children will be able to use their drama skills to help them access this theme.  We will be learning about the importance of ‘Relationships’ in PSHE and be designing our own information pages about a topic of our own choice using ICT and the Publisher programme.

A musical term ahead with Lawrence from MeloSong teaching the class on Tuesday afternoons until July, with an undoubtedly unmissable singing performance taking place at the school before we break for the Summer holidays.  We will have a specialist coach teaching cricket to the children on Thursday afternoon for their P.E. session and their normal Games session will continue to be on a Friday morning.   The children will also get involved in a cycling proficiency course which will begin the week beginning 24th June. This half term, homework will be sent out on Friday and must be handed in on Wednesday. Homework will be given out today (19th April) and continue until the May half term. To replace weekly homework in the last half term of the year, a whole school homework project will be set. More details will follow later in the term.

Please do get in touch if you have any questions or concerns. Many thanks for your continued support during this year.

With very best wishes,

Charmaine Mayer
