At St Saviour's, we believe that children learn best when parents work together in partnership with the school; consolidate and reinforce skills and understanding; extend school learning to develop a creative, learning culture/ethos; encourage older pupils to be self motivated and disciplined in their study.
Homework tasks are planned for alongside weekly planning to ensure that there is progression in learning.
Tasks are the same across the year group and are differentiated to provide appropriate challenge. Homework tasks are explained thoroughly to children in class before they come home. Children are encouraged to complete their homework independently as it is a continuation of what they have been learning in class. These tasks should take no longer than 30 minutes to complete.
Children are given weekly spellings to practise and learn at home. These are tested in school.
Children are asked to complete one or two short Maths task to consolidate their learning from their Maths lessons that week.
A small grammar or writing task may be given so children can work on their sentence building skills.
The most important part of any child's homework is reading. Parents are encouraged to read with and listen to their child reading as often as possible. Reading records are used between home and school to record what children have particularly enjoyed or are proud of.
As they approach the end of their time in Primary school, our Year 6 pupils need to prepare themselves for the demand of homework in their Secondary school. To ensure this is a smooth transition, pupils are given a specific subject to complete each evening with the expectation that they bring it to school the next day to be marked. We use CGP SATs Busters to support with this.
