The statutory framework for the EYFS states the importance of supporting children to develop a love of literature, with the aim to achieve a lifelong love of literature. The document also explains the components required for early years children to begin to learn to read: language comprehension and word reading.
Literacy in the early years requires children to have an understanding of several different elements, such as phonics development for reading and writing, language skills for reading comprehension and writing activities as well as the physical skills to write recognisable letters.
