Spring Term Reading Texts

This is a wonderful example of engaging non-fiction where the illustrations play as much of a part as the text. In this unit we will read the text as a class and in pairs. The children will have the opportunity to sequence events, retrieve information, familarise themselves with technical language and make some very simple inferences.

A hilarious story in which Fox cub siblings Ted and Nancy are on the run from Princess Buttons, the scariest street cat in the Big City.

This unit covers all the reading comprehension curriculum for year two with vocabulary being explicitly taught at the beginning of each session. In particular, children will: explore the effect of word choices and phrases that the author has used; identify and sequence key events; make inferences and predict future events.

This double-sided foldout book takes you on a fascinating journey deep underground. One side of the foldout shows the ground beneath the city, whilst the reverse side shows the ground beneath the countryside. The underground scenes include tunnels and pipes, creatures' burrows, layers of rock and the planet’s molten core, and run seamlessly into the next. Mixing urban and rural settings, covering subjects such as geology, archaeology and natural history. This is a wonderful opportunity for children to look visually at how information can be presented. The children look at the vocabulary associated with the underground and earth and retrieve information as well as start to make some simple inferences.
